CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

SCRIPTURE READING:

Hebrews 9: 15, 27, 28  |  Hebrews 10: 23-25  |  Hebrews 11: 8-10

15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.  Hebrews 9: 15   NKJV

27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.  Hebrews 9: 27, 28   NKJV

23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.  Hebrews 10: 23-25   NKJV

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.  Hebrews 11: 8-10   NKJV

SERMON:

2020, Look Up, Our Redemption Draws Nigh!

*25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”  Luke 21: 25-28   NKJV

*24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me,

let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.   Matthew 16: 24-27   NKJV

*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

SCRIPTURE READING:

John 3: 16-18  |  Luke 1: 26-38  |  Luke 2: 1-20

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  John 3: 16-18   NKJV

Now lets read the greatest story ever told!

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”  29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”  35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”  38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.  Luke 1: 26-38   NKJV

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar

Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.  4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.  8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And [c]behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest,

And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

SERMON:

Teach the Children!

*Santa explains the symbolism behind the customs and traditions of Christmas.
*The Christmas tree. Green is the second color of Christmas. The stately evergreen, with its unchanging color, represents the hope of eternal life in Jesus. Its needles point heavenward as a reminder that mankind's thoughts should turn heavenward as well.”
*"The star was the heavenly sign of promise. God promised a Savior for the world and the star was the sign of the fulfillment of that promise on the night that Jesus Christ was born. Teach the children that God always fulfills His promises, and that wise men still seek Him."
*"Red, is the first color of Christmas." A red ornament for the tiny tree. "Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the color of the life-giving blood that flows through our veins. It is the symbol of God's greatest gift. Teach the children that Christ gave His life and shed His blood for them that they might have eternal life.
*A silver bell:  "Just as lost sheep are guided to safety by the sound of the bell, it continues to ring today for all to be guided to the fold. Teach the children to listen for the bell and follow the true Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep."
*A lit candle on the mantle: The soft glow from its one tiny flame brightened the room. “The glow of the candle represents how Jesus is the light of the world.  People can show their thanks for the gift of God's Son that Christmas Eve long ago. Teach the children to follow in Christ's foot steps... to live by faith and to go about doing good.”
*Let the light of Jesus so shine before all men that they will see it and glorify God. This is what is symbolized when the twinkling lights shine on the tree, like hundreds of bright, shining candles, each of them representing one of God's precious children, their light shining for all to see.”
*A red and white striped cane. As I hung it on the tree, I spoke softly. “The candy cane is a stick of hard white candy.  Hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church, Jesus, and the firmness of God's promises.”
“The original candy cane is white to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus.  It also has three small red stripes, which are the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed, and a large red stripe that represents the shed blood of Jesus, so that we can have the promise of eternal life.”
And it is in the shape of a ‘J’ to represent the Good Shepherd's crook, which He uses to reach down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.”  In English, ‘J’ is also the first letter of Jesus’s name.
*a beautiful wreath made of fresh, fragrant greenery tied with a bright red bow. “The wreath embodies all the good things about Christmas for those with eyes to see and hearts to understand. It contains the colors of red and green and the heaven-turned needles of the evergreen.”
Even its very shape is symbolic, representing eternity and the eternal nature of Christ's love. It is a circle, without beginning and without end.
“The bow reminds us of the bond of perfection, which is love. The bow tells the story of good will towards all men and its color reminds us of Christ's sacrifice..”
*These are the things you must teach the children.”
*A smile broke over Santa's face. “I'm only a symbol myself. I represent the spirit of family fun and the joy of giving and receiving.  If the children are taught these things about Jesus, that is the important message.”
*All of these symbols and elements of Christmas truly point to the true spirit of Christmas, Jesus Christ.  He is the true gift of Christmas, God, the Father’s gift to all men that they will turn their lives and follow Him.
*God's love for the world, and everyone in it is so awesomely great and incomprehensible that we cannot know it except by His great gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.  God gave His only begotten Son!!
*Paul speaks of this in Romans 5:7:
"For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good
man someone would even dare to die."  Romans 5:7
Yet Jesus came to earth and died for sinners, people who by their actions and hearts were estranged from God, you and me.
*Christmas happens at the darkest time of the year.  We live in a dark world.
*John 3: “men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
*The birth of Jesus, God’s Son at the darkest time of the year is entirely fitting and proper in a dark world of men, women and children given to sin.
*We are given to sin in our attitudes and actions.  In the way we treat others with contempt or hatred.  And in our pride, prejudices, greed and lust.  One doesn’t have to actually commit the action to harbor hatred and lust and pride.
*God tells us in Hebrews 9:
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and      without shedding of blood there is no remission. [of sin]   Hebrews 9: 22
*You and I are deserving of death for our attitudes and actions simply because we have ignored God’s righteousness and seek after our own desires and pleasures.
*God gave His only begotten Son to redeem us, to cover us with His blood for the sin we commit.
*For those who believe in Him, we are called righteous by Him!  Sin brings death.  Jesus gives us life, here, and promises us eternal life. Jesus is alive!
*These are the lessons we must be teaching our children.
*The truth of John 3: 16 & 17 resounds through the ages when men’s worldly philosophies run in opposite directions.  People cling to it's truth because they came to know that He who spoke those words IS alive.  In Jesus is truth!  They walk with Him everyday, and see His hand guiding them.
*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

SCRIPTURE READING:

Psalm 24: 1-5;  7-10  |  Psalm 100  |  Ephesians 5: 17-20

The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,

The world and those who dwell therein.

2 For He has founded it upon the seas,

And established it upon the waters.

3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?

Or who may stand in His holy place?

4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,

Nor sworn deceitfully.

5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord,

And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

7 Lift up your heads, O you gates!

And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!

And the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory?

The Lord strong and mighty,

The Lord mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O you gates!

Lift up, you everlasting doors!

And the King of glory shall come in.

10 Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of hosts,

He is the King of glory. Selah  Psalm 24: 1-5;  7-10   NKJV

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness;

Come before His presence with singing.

3 Know that the Lord, He is God;

It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;

We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,

And into His courts with praise.

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

5 For the Lord is good;

His mercy is everlasting,

And His truth endures to all generations.  Psalm 100   NKJV

17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.  Ephesians 5: 17-20   NKJV

SERMON:

Forever Thankful!

*The first Thanksgiving was actually a joint harvest celebration of the Indians and settlers.  For the settlers of Plimouth Plantation, it was a thanksgiving to God in celebration that they had survived the winter and had found a measure of success in establishing themselves in the New World.
*Would you be able to give thanks if in the past year, half of your family and friends had died, and you had had to shelter in misery through that brutal winter with meager rations?
*…Are you a Thankful person?  Those settlers thanked God for their harvest and survival!
*What is profoundly important to your life also profoundly impacts the kind of life you live.  Being a thankful person creates in you an enormous sense of happiness, contentment and peace.  Thankfulness helps us to see the world around us and the possibilities of even bringing that peace and contentment to others.
*Thankfulness improves our relationships with others.
*Thankfulness creates contentment in us.
*10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;

Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.

This also is vanity.  Ecclesiastes 5: 10  NKJV

*Without thankfulness, we will never be satisfied with the things of this world.  We always want more.
*Thankfulness also keeps us healthy. Gratitude is a natural path to optimism and can even boost our immune system.
*Thankfulness also cultivates humility in us.
*Thankfulness also produces optimism in our lives.
*Jeff Dixon, a Christian author says: “Sometimes we focus so much on what we don't have that we fail to see, appreciate, and use what we do have!”
*Thankfulness also keeps us healthy.
*Thankfulness is contagious!
*Thankfulness promotes generosity in us.
*Thankfulness increases likability.
*Thankfulness displays God’s character to us, and His light and life in us to others.
*A thankful heart is one that God is working in.
*A thankful heart is one that knows God is at work and that He is our creator!
*The culture of Christ is completely different than anything this world has to offer.  We are to put away our earthly influences and take on those of Christ alone.  Those Plymouth settlers had reason to grieve, and so do we at times,  but they lived to praise God and thank Him because of who He is!
*As families come together around a Thanksgiving table this week, let us come together as believers in Jesus Christ.  In Jesus alone, we have everything to be thankful for.  So let’s lift our eyes to Him and express with our whole hearts our gratitude.
*      I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the           calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness,           with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to               keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body
and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one           Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above           all, and through all, and in you all.  Ephesians 4
*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!
