CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

SCRIPTURE READING:

Psalm 24: 1-5;  7-10  |  Psalm 100  |  Ephesians 5: 17-20

The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,

The world and those who dwell therein.

2 For He has founded it upon the seas,

And established it upon the waters.

3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?

Or who may stand in His holy place?

4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,

Nor sworn deceitfully.

5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord,

And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

7 Lift up your heads, O you gates!

And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!

And the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory?

The Lord strong and mighty,

The Lord mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O you gates!

Lift up, you everlasting doors!

And the King of glory shall come in.

10 Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of hosts,

He is the King of glory. Selah  Psalm 24: 1-5;  7-10   NKJV

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness;

Come before His presence with singing.

3 Know that the Lord, He is God;

It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;

We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,

And into His courts with praise.

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

5 For the Lord is good;

His mercy is everlasting,

And His truth endures to all generations.  Psalm 100   NKJV

17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.  Ephesians 5: 17-20   NKJV

SERMON:

Forever Thankful!

*The first Thanksgiving was actually a joint harvest celebration of the Indians and settlers.  For the settlers of Plimouth Plantation, it was a thanksgiving to God in celebration that they had survived the winter and had found a measure of success in establishing themselves in the New World.
*Would you be able to give thanks if in the past year, half of your family and friends had died, and you had had to shelter in misery through that brutal winter with meager rations?
*…Are you a Thankful person?  Those settlers thanked God for their harvest and survival!
*What is profoundly important to your life also profoundly impacts the kind of life you live.  Being a thankful person creates in you an enormous sense of happiness, contentment and peace.  Thankfulness helps us to see the world around us and the possibilities of even bringing that peace and contentment to others.
*Thankfulness improves our relationships with others.
*Thankfulness creates contentment in us.
*10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;

Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.

This also is vanity.  Ecclesiastes 5: 10  NKJV

*Without thankfulness, we will never be satisfied with the things of this world.  We always want more.
*Thankfulness also keeps us healthy. Gratitude is a natural path to optimism and can even boost our immune system.
*Thankfulness also cultivates humility in us.
*Thankfulness also produces optimism in our lives.
*Jeff Dixon, a Christian author says: “Sometimes we focus so much on what we don't have that we fail to see, appreciate, and use what we do have!”
*Thankfulness also keeps us healthy.
*Thankfulness is contagious!
*Thankfulness promotes generosity in us.
*Thankfulness increases likability.
*Thankfulness displays God’s character to us, and His light and life in us to others.
*A thankful heart is one that God is working in.
*A thankful heart is one that knows God is at work and that He is our creator!
*The culture of Christ is completely different than anything this world has to offer.  We are to put away our earthly influences and take on those of Christ alone.  Those Plymouth settlers had reason to grieve, and so do we at times,  but they lived to praise God and thank Him because of who He is!
*As families come together around a Thanksgiving table this week, let us come together as believers in Jesus Christ.  In Jesus alone, we have everything to be thankful for.  So let’s lift our eyes to Him and express with our whole hearts our gratitude.
*      I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the           calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness,           with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to               keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body
         and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one           Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above           all, and through all, and in you all.  Ephesians 4
*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!
