CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

SCRIPTURE READING:

James 1: 2-8  |  James 3: 17-18   NKJV

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.  James 1: 2-8   NKJV

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.  James 3: 17-18   NKJV

SERMON:

Where Wisdom is Found!

*Three books of the Bible most people associate with wisdom.
*Job continues to praise God but questions why he was ever born.

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

2 “Who is this who darkens counsel

By words without knowledge?

3 Now prepare yourself like a man;

I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Tell Me, if you have understanding.  Job 38: 1-4   NKJV

*Perhaps the one man who best understood was King Solomon.
        12 Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his
        kingdom was firmly established.  1st Kings 2: 12   NKJV

3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David…  1st Kings 3: 3   NKJV

5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”  1st Kings 3: 5   NKJV

7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.  1st Kings 3: 7   NKJV

9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”  10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.  1st Kings 3: 9, 10   NKJV

11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”  1st Kings 3: 11-14   NKJV

*The Book of Proverbs are powerful statements of truths and oracles, an
authoritative and wise expression of answers for life’s situations.  Ecclesiastes lays a foundation for us as we go through life that enables us to keep everything in order, in perspective.
*3,000 years ago, Solomon wrote what was to become a number one hit here in America.
 3 To everything there is a season,

A time for every purpose under heaven:

2 A time to be born,

And a time to die;

A time to plant,

And a time to pluck what is planted;

3 A time to kill,

And a time to heal;

A time to break down,

And a time to build up;

4 A time to weep,

And a time to laugh;

A time to mourn,

And a time to dance;

5 A time to cast away stones,

And a time to gather stones;

A time to embrace,

And a time to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to gain,

And a time to lose;

A time to keep,

And a time to throw away;

7 A time to tear,

And a time to sew;

A time to keep silence,

And a time to speak;

8 A time to love,

And a time to hate;

A time of war,

And a time of peace.  Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8   NKJV

 9 What profit has the worker from that in which he labors? 10 I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, 13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.

14 I know that whatever God does,

It shall be forever.

Nothing can be added to it,

And nothing taken from it.

God does it, that men should fear before Him.

Ecclesiastes 3: 9-11  NKJV

*After he spells out all the dichotomies of life, the incongruities and the contradictions, he ends the book ten chapters later with this in chapter 13:

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,

For this is man’s all.

14 For God will bring every work into judgment,

Including every secret thing,

Whether good or evil.  Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14   NKJV

*A wise man seeks God’s wisdom and understanding his whole life.
*Solomon did not live out the wisdom God gave him in his later life.

4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 5 He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.  1st Kings 11: 4-6

*Solomon had taken some 700 wives and 300 concubines to himself of nations that God had specifically told him not to do, wives given to other gods.  And because Solomon did not keep the covenant with God, and worshipped other gods, God would take Solomon’s kingdom away from him.
*Early, Solomon looked to the heavens for life’s issues and declared:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

But fools despise wisdom and instruction.  Proverbs 1: 7   NKJV

*       “…let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking
        unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,…”  Hebrews 12: 1, 2                NKJV

 This race of faith is a lifelong race that we run.  It begins when we hear and respond and believe.  If we put off believing, we do not join the race and will not win the prize.  Either look to the reward or it will be taken away from you…

*Are we so proud of our own wisdom and understanding that we think we know better than God, who created us?  We need to pursue Godly wisdom and understanding!  Run after it!

*     Get wisdom! Get understanding!

Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;

Love her, and she will keep you.

7 Wisdom is the principal thing;

Therefore get wisdom.

And in all your getting, get understanding.  Proverbs 4

*Wisdom is NOT a buffet line where you pick and choose what you want to eat.  Wisdom is a ‘full meal deal,’ a meal set before you by the Lord that you eat and set your life to follow in complete obedience.
*Solomon fell into unbelief and began believing in other gods.  Solomon lost his fear of God!  You and I can lose our faith, and the wisdom and understanding that comes from God.  Run the race with endurance, with perseverance.
*     6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one
       comes to the Father except through Me.  John 14: 6   NKJV
In your life, pursue truth and wisdom from God with all you have…
*For the director of music. Of David.

1 The fool says in his heart,

    “There is no God.”

They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;

    there is no one who does good.

2 The Lord looks down from heaven

    on all mankind

to see if there are any who understand,

    any who seek God.  Psalm 14:1   NKJV

*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!
