16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”  18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.  24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. SERMON:

Godly Families and the Perversity of Our Times


*Times don’t change.  Mankind still lives the same way today that we did since the very beginning of time when Eve plucked that fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  We may think we are more sophisticated, more intelligent, but our hearts are still given to evil.
*the Bible continues to be extremely relevant today in this 21st century world.  It addresses the sin and the hatred for God in this world.
*God doesn’t change!
*What God loves.  God has always loved the people of His creation, but there is a caveat.  What does God look for in the people of His creation?

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.  9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.  Genesis 6: 8, 9   NKJV

*What does God want in His children?

5 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.  Ephesians 5: 1, 2   NKJV

God loves those who love Him and seek to walk like Him in their lives!

*What does God hate? 

5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.  Genesis 6: 5, 6   NKJV

*The prophet Isaiah wrote this 2,700 years ago:

20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;

Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;

Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

       Isaiah 5: 20 NKJV

*You choose!  Walk in the light and the ways of God, or walk in evil and darkness.  One comes with a blessing, one comes with a curse and death.

*God still hates sin today! 
       22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of         the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and               birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.  24 Therefore God             also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor         their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for           the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator,             who is blessed forever. Amen.  Romans 1: 22-25   NKJV

*We fashion gods after our own likeness and desires.  We want gods who will accept our ways, our pleasures and desires.  God our creator says if we will not follow Him, He will give us up to uncleanness, to the lusts of our hearts...

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. *God’s ways are not our ways!  Our ways are not God’s ways!   His ways are infinitely greater than ours!   God is not going to accept or agree with our ways.  Not now, not ever!
*God created us in His own image.  God doesn’t make mistakes!!  He created us male and female for us to fulfill the purpose He directs in us. 
*God’s creation is completely ordered for man and woman to be together and to fulfill that which God created for them.  God’s design is for each to compliment the other, to love the other and live out the purpose God designed for us in relationship.
*The Christian marriage is a microcosm of the church and is to reflect Christ just as His church is supposed to. 
      22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the                  husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He          is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to              Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.  25                  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave        Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the                  washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a          glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that 
      she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love            their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.        29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,            just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of          His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his               father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one       flesh.”  Ephesians 5:  22-31   NKJV
*In this ‘me’ world where everything is tailored to what I want, this teaching will seem particularly abhorrent to us.  Don’t tell me how to live!!  We want to do what we want to do!
*As we look at the truths and ways of God, and bring our lives into alignment with Him, we find blessings that greatly enrich us.
*A Christ centered marriage shows us what it means to give our all to the other.
*Marriage is best defined: “each for the other, and both for Christ!”
*The sin in a person’s life separates them from the love of Christ.
*This is only realized through repentance.  Repentance is turning away from your own thinking that your way is better than Gods, and fully agreeing with God, turning your life to God’s ways!
*All sinful choices we make in our lives.  Paul continues:

29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;  32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.  Romans 1: 29-32   NKJV

*Maimonides, the 12th century Jewish philosopher who became one of the most prolific and influential Torah scholars, said this:  "Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it."  
*God will never accept mans ways even if ALL mankind demands in unison their way is better!  Mankind will never understand God’s ways, or His justice or His sovereignty.  But God is our creator and redeemer.  His ways are final and eternal.
*As believers in Jesus Christ should want to know what God’s position is on matters in this world.  We should not only want to know, we should be standing on these truths, even with our lives.
*God has given men and women choice, the ability to decide for themselves what they wish to happen.  King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 16:

25 There is a way that seems right to a man,

But its end is the way of death.  Proverbs 16: 25   NKJV

*But God calls His people to righteousness born in Christ Jesus!  In Him is where we will find truth and the relationship to be able to walk it out in our lives:

For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial?  2nd Corinthians 6: 14, 15   NKJV

 

17 Therefore

“Come out from among them

And be separate, says the Lord.

Do not touch what is unclean,

And I will receive you.”

18 “I will be a Father to you,

And you shall be My sons and daughters,

Says the Lord Almighty.”  2nd Corinthians 6: 17, 18   NKJV

*Consider the BIG questions of your life!  The perversity of this world will overtake us unless we remain vigilante to the truth of God.  We have to be in His Word, the Bible, to know the difference.
*This is a time for our faith to become real!  Trust Him.  Hear Him!

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.  18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.  Matthew 28: 16-20   NKJV


10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—  Ephesians 6: 10-18   NKJV           


SERMON:

Communism | Socialism | & Christianity


*There is a reality in this world that when someone stands for their faith in God, they may very likely face persecution. 
*Daniel records the accounts of three Jewish men, facing the wrath of King Nebuchadnezzar for not doing that which the king commanded.
*Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, worshipped the true God, and refused to worship the kings idol.
*13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave the command to           bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego.  Daniel 3: 13   NKJV

And King Nebuchadnezzar said to them:

15 Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, good! But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”  Daniel 3: 15   NKJV

But the three Jewish men refused and said to the king:

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”  Daniel 3: 16-18   NKJV

In a rage and full of fury, King Nebuchadnezzar commands:

21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.  Daniel 3: 21   NKJV

*The reality of persecution for one’s faith in this world remains to this day, even more than 2,500 years after Daniels account.
*Yet, God delivers Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego out of that fiery furnace:

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”  They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”  25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire.  Daniel 3: 24-26   NKJV

 *Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were firmly bound and thrown into the fire at the command of the king.  But they were set free in the midst of the fire and persecution, walking with the Son of God.  Walking in faith always sets us free!!

*God always seeks people who will stand in their faith in the face of risks and threats.  It doesn’t matter what kind of government you live under

*Old and New Testaments do not make political distinctions.  The Bible does not endorse one form of government and condemn another government.  

*There is no perfect culture or nation. 
*The Declaration of Independence states the principles on which our government, and our identity as Americans, are based.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

*The Preamble of the US Constitution reads:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

*And as noble and right as those words sound, we still must acknowledge that there is no perfect culture or nation.  People will always seek their own pleasures and desires over noble sounding words and laws.  Even over the truth of God.  It is the nature of man.

*The message today focuses on Communism | Socialism | & Christianity, a relevant issue given what is happening today in our country.  
*In a sermon delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church on September 30th, 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr asked the question: “Can a Christian Be a Communist?”  

*Some might ask if this is an appropriate message for a pastors sermon.  I point to the words of Paul we read in Ephesians 6.  We live in a fallen world, we strive against powers and principalities that war against believers in Jesus.  Paul urges us to equip ourselves and be ready.
*Three reasons:  Communism is having widespread influence in our contemporary world.  Many people in our country have accepted it as a new religion, and are willing to surrender their total being to this atheist system for people to worship and honor the state and science instead of God.

*Second is that communism is the only serious rival of Christianity.   There are alternatives to Christianity in other religions, but the most formidable competitor is communism.  At it’s very core, Communism seeks to destroy all religions and faiths. 

*Finally, Because it is such a potent force and system of thought, it cannot be ignored.  It is important that we understand why it is wrong and why it is evil.
*Communism and Christianity are diametrically opposed. 

*Communism is irreconcilable with Christianity! In the first place, it leaves out God and Jesus Christ. Communism is avowedly secularistic and materialist.  Communism is an atheistic system. It denies the existence of God.
*We Christians disagree with this because we believe that history is moved not by economic forces, but by spiritual forces.  Consequently, we can’t accept communism at that point.

*A second reason that we can’t accept communism is that its methods are opposed to Christianity.  For the communist there is no divine government or no absolute moral order, there are no fixed, immutable principles. So force, violence, murder, and lying are all justifiable means.

*Lenin, putting the philosophy of Karl Marx into practical action, said, “We must be ready to employ trickery, deceit, and lawbreaking, withholding and concealing truth.”
*Christians believe that there are certain moral principles in this universe that are eternal and absolute. We believe that there are some things right and there are some things wrong. It’s wrong to lie. It always has been wrong, and it always will be wrong. 

*It’s wrong to hate.  It always has been wrong, and it always will be wrong. It’s wrong to throw away the precious lives that God has given us in riotous living. It was wrong in 1800 B.C., and it’s wrong in 1962 A.D.
*We have to disagree with communism because the end of communism is the state.
*In the communistic system, you do not have freedom of the press. You do not have freedom of speech. You do not have freedom of assembly. All of these things are under the scrutiny of the state
*We know that the most creative moments in history are those moments when individuals are left free to think. The thing that makes man man is his freedom.  Communism as a philosophical system because it deprives man of freedom. And if a man is not free, he is not fully man. If a man does not have the capacity to deliberate, to decide, and to respond, he is not a man, for a man is man because he is free. And, therefore, communism is wrong 
*Dr King concludes: These two systems are opposed to each other. These two systems are contradictory. We must try to understand communism. We must love communists. But never can we accept communism and be true Christians.  
*We must ask ourselves, “who is the great deceiver?”  It is Satan and his demons.
*But regardless of what government we live under, the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, calls on believers to:

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Ephesians 6:12   NKJV

*On this earth, there will always be people, nations and cultures who hate Christians and seek to persecute and destroy them.  But we are called to stand in faith!  We need to know Jesus personally and walk with Him relationally.  

*However much is wrong with communism, we must admit that it arose as a protest against the hardships of the underprivileged and lower classes of nations.

*Nearly 2000 years ago, it was Jesus Himself who called our attentions to the needs of the poor and outcast!  It was Jesus who healed the sick and the lame.  It was Jesus who raised the dead.  It was Jesus through His parables and example gave direction to how we should live and love others.  

*    27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this:        to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself        unspotted from the world.  James 1: 27   NKJV
But Jesus gives us this commandment:
      34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one                    another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35          By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love        for one another.”  John 13: 34 & 35   NKJV
*Jesus is our creator, savior and redeemer!  His commands to us are eternal in nature and provoke in us to greatly love Him and others.  
*Ask yourself, are you bold like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego?  Is your faith as sure as theirs was to face the persecution of the king?  Would you go to the fire?  It is a call to each of us to know Jesus who was the most courageous and willing went to the cross to save us.  
*In Jesus, we have true freedom and liberty, because in Him we have a promised eternity!

SERMON:

The Sanctity of Life


*The central theme of this message is about the choices we make, good or bad that reflect what we believe, and the truth of God.  
*There are issues, worldly issues that will confront us throughout our lifetimes, issues that we may face personally, and issues that we face as a nation and culture.  Are we going to choose to stand on the truth of God or give in to those of society?
*God’s truth stands completely transcendent, above all in authority, to any and all other issues we face in our lives.  There is no higher authority we can turn to but God.  
*God is a moral God!  In His Word, He has given us clear commands we are to follow and to proclaim.  God does not change.  His truths He gave in the beginning are the same truths you and I must live by today.

I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”  Jeremiah 1: 4, 5   NKJV


*He, the Lord, formed us in the womb; He knew us even before we

were born and He sanctified us from the moment we were conceived!

To be sanctified means to be set apart for God’s purposes, to be Holy for His name!

*26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”  Genesis 1: 26-28   NKJV

*man and woman were created in God’s own image: to reason, to communicate, to love, to bear one another’s burdens, to have a close relationship with our creator.

*139 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off.

3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue,

But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

5 You have hedged me behind and before,

And laid Your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain it.  Psalm 139: 1-6   NKJV

*It is called love!  God knows our inner most being, and He loves us. 

*He loves and enters in when we repent and humble ourselves before Him!  It is so important to Him that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, for us!

*15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.  Deuteronomy 30: 15   NKJV

*God is telling His people to choose life!  Do you want a blessing over this land, or do you want a curse?  If you want to prosper, to have good health and life, choose life! 

*13 For You formed my inward parts;

You covered me in my mother’s womb.

14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well.  Psalm 139; 13, 14   NKJV

 *From the very moment of conception, we play a significant role in the whole plan of God.  From the very beginning, God is creating a whole new life of someone who can Praise and bring glory to His name.

*18 He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the

stranger, giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 10: 18   NKJV

*27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.  James 1: 27   NKJV

*God’s heart is for the fatherless, widow and stranger.  So much so, that Jesus gives us a fearsome warning in Matthew 18.  Listen carefully to His Words:

Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it

would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!  Matthew 18: 5-7   NKJV

*God loves to show Himself faithful to us! 

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his

parents, that he was born blind?”

Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.  John 9: 1-7   NKJV

*When we treasure life, we treasure the life giver, our Lord!
